I love seeing these ten year challenge posts all over social media. I can’t believe Jaap and I have known each other for ten years. The picture of us above was one of the first times we had the chance to sit, have a few drinks together, and chat outside of band rehearsals. A very late night at 2A in the Lower East side with our friends.  I love that we have a picture from that night.

What a fun adventure the last ten years have been full of happiness, love, and many challenges. Dating in NY, moving to Maastricht, getting settle in the Netherlands, two weddings, lots of European and North American travel adventures, and of course making a happy family.

Thanks for an amazing ten years, Babe! Here’s to many more decades to come. XOXO

Flora’s 5!

***This post has been sitting in my drafts for 3+ months. A happy belated birthday post to Flora.

To my dearest Flora,

Thank you for being the little human that you are. Your smile lights up a room! We loved celebrating your 5th birthday with you, complete with a Princess Jasmine cake and a sushi dinner. I can’t believe all of the new things that you have done this year. Starting school, making new friends, drawing and colouring for hours on end, exploring Italy, Ireland, and the U.S., beginning to learn how to ride a bike, dancing your heart out and performing in your very first dance show, learning your numbers and letters, learning how to play card games, and your love of face paint. My favorite part of watching you grow up is the love your share with everyone, especially how much you love your little brother. I wish I could freeze time and keep you this age for just a little longer, but as you say all the time, “I can’t Mom. I’m growing up.” Yes you are and we’re excited to see what age 5 will bring this year!

Love,

Mama

Hoera! Thibault is 2

Dear Mr. T,

To my little man, no longer a baby, but a growing boy. Where has the time gone? How is possible you are two years old? How is it possible we have survived this level of sleep deprivation for two years?

To my Thibault— you are ball of energy always looking for an adventure. You are outgoing and friendly to everyone, you love physical activity, riding your balance bike, climbing stairs, running, and jumping. You crave being outdoors all the time and feel at ease in nature. You are a curious little man with no fear. The fun never stops with you. You are completely in love with your sister and it fills our hearts with joy.

We love you to bits and are excited to see what “2” brings you this year!

*****After writing this post I realized Flora’s 5th birthday post is still sitting in my draft folder. Ooops. That will come next!

Thibault’s 1st Birthday!

IMG_6511

It’s taken me a month to write this post. How awful! My little man Thibault turned 1 last month! I cannot believe he is already a year old (and now almost 13 months). I’m not sure how it’s possible for something to seem like the longest year of your life and at the same time the shortest. Either way—my little man is growing up!

Celebrations at the creche

To Mr. T, if you read this when you are older—life with you is always an adventure! You’re curious, active, and completely in love with your sister. You love to make music, play with anything but your toys, and you rarely sit still. You have a curious spirit and I have a feeling that when you grow up, you will try anything! You’re happy, loud, and outgoing. We love you to pieces and are so blessed to have you. XOXO

The Elsa Cake

IMG_4522

On Friday we celebrated Flora’s 4th birthday. I can’t believe she is almost 4! To celebrate we had a small party with a few of her friends. Very small and simple….except the cake! Flora asked for an princess cake, so we started brainstorming. What could Mama actually create that wouldn’t turn out like a Cake Wreck?

Great inspiration in this book!

As part of down time/ screen time, Flora and I sometimes watch baking channels on Youtube. It’s amazing what one can learn on Youtube! Her favourites to watch are of course Elsa cakes, but many of them are quite difficult. We found a video of a Princess Aurora cake that doesn’t require fondant and it was my inspiration for this cake.

I was so happy with the results and Flora was thrilled! I was so nervous this week leading up to this process. I was referencing this children’s cake book, various Youtube channels, cooking blogs, Pinterest, etc. This may sound ridiculous, but it was starting to stress me out a bit, but in an exciting way! I told Jaap my biggest fear was disappointing Flora because she thinks I can do anything. In the end it was a huge success. She loved it, it tasted great, and I felt so proud. Unfortunately, I believe I have now set the birthday cake bar pretty high for future birthdays. 🙂 Happy (early) birthday boo boo! We love you.
